Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store on the Northwest Side. She began an investigation lasting 30 years that would alter our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her work with him challenged the common belief that birds could only mimic human speech with any understanding of what it means.
What is Alex?

He also demonstrated an ability to recognize analogies and recognize the written word form - although he didn't seem to connect them with their spoken versions.
Most parrots are taught words however they don't know the significance behind the meaning behind them. To teach Alex, Pepperberg and her assistants would create scenarios involving the object they wanted him to know about. This technique is referred to as the rival model and it has since become an established method of teaching animals.
Alex was not just a cognitively gifted dog but also a fun and affectionate dog who loved to play with his owners. He often served as an advisor and cheerleader during the training sessions, urging or admonishing them to do better. He was very observant and was able to discern the emotions of his human companions. He would leap into his owner's arms when she was happy, and hold her legs if she was unhappy or sad.
What was Alex's impact on the world?
In his short life, Alex changed many lives. His legacy is a testimony to his determination and character. He was an inspiration to many climbers, mountaineers and those who wanted to live life in their own way. He taught people that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. He believed that if you do not worry about what others think of your character, you will achieve the heights of success.
Chris/Alex was faced with many difficulties throughout his journey. He had to deal with the loss of his father, financial hardships and hardship. He was able to conquer every obstacle with his sheer determination and perseverance. He never gave up on his goal of becoming a mountain climber. He pushed on towards his goal and eventually became one of the most well-known mountaineers in the world.
Even after his death, he continues to inspire people across the world. The film Free Solo is a documentary about Alex's life and his incredible climbing achievements. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim and is considered to be one of the greatest documentaries ever produced. It has also won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019.
In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues of avian intelligence. Alex was able to perform more than 100 vocal label for objects and actions. He was also capable of counting up to six object sets and displayed math skills that were quite advanced at the time for a bird.
He also could communicate with other animals via signs and had a good understanding of grammar. He utilized a method of teaching called "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers would often switch positions to allow the bird to interact with them and receive the attention of each.
Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. He was able to accomplish many things throughout his life because of his determination to character and his desire to live life to his own terms.
